Girls (2012) on HBO created by, written by AND Starring Lena Dunham. Above (left to right) Jemima Kirke, Allison Williams, Lena Dunham, and Zosia Mamet.
If you haven't watched the first season of the hit series Girls on HBO, now is the time to catch up! Since it's premier on April 15, 2012, Girls has become a hit series, revolving around the lives of 4 young adult friends living in New York and facing the many challenges and responsibilities that come with adulthood and independence. However, what makes Girls different from a coming-of-age drama is that it is a modern day comedy with a script that is able to relate to the life experiences of young adults today and touches upon these true to life moments with smart and witty humor that will have you laughing through every episode. What I find is the best aspect of the show is in its portrayal of real characters that have imperfections and flaws that are both recognisable and refreshing. All 4 girls maintain very different personalities of character but each has their hardship and each has their flaws. When my friends and I first watched it, we were all able to relate to a certain character or certain characteristics of each of the girls which made it easier to relate to the storyline and understand what each character is going through. Lena Dunham does an amazing job with the script and maintains each character's personal style throughout the season, slipping in her comedic, whitty humor as much as possible. I find that each time I watch an episode over I find funny quotes in it that I hadn't noticed before.
Girls Season 1 Recap:
If you havn't seen Season 1 of Girls, and want to know more, this recap is for you.
The show begins with the main character, Hannah (Lena Dunham), getting a visit from her parents in New York and over dinner they break the news to her that they will no longer help to pay her bills. It is here that Hannah's character is introduced as a post-graduate writer who moved to New York to fulfill her writing career, landed an unpaid internship at a publishing company, and then was abruptly financially cut -off by her parents on this visit. This financial blow to Hannah's life, forces her to reevalute her current life and make changes in order to keep her independance afloat in the City.
It is then that we are introduced to Marnie (Allison Williams), who is Hannah's best friend and roommate. Marnie is an old soul and viewed as the "adult" out of the friends, having a high-paying job at an art studio and a long-term relationship with a boyfriend from college. Hannah and Marnie are polar opposites, but as you see their friendship unfold it is eminent that they balence eachother out perfectly. Marnie seems to have her life together, but beneath the surface she is having many doubts especially in her relationship, which she hangs on to for security until a sudden change spins her out of her comfortable life and forces her to also have to face unwanted change and insecurities.
On the otherside of town, the remaining two characters are introduced as Jessa (Jemima Kirke), a british born, free-spirit, with a constant need for excitement and change, moves in to her younger cousin Shoshanna's (Zosia Memet) apartment. Shoshanna and Jessa could not be more different when it comes to every aspect of thinking. Where Shoshanna is neat, inexperienced, uncertain, uptight, yet optimistic, Jessa is blunt, overtly experienced, distructive, careless, and unpredictable. However, just as Marnie and Hannah are an odd pair that works, so does Jessa and Shoshanna each having something to teach the other as the season unravels.

There is nothing like some Holiday Commercials to get you in the joyous spirit. In looking back to all of the Holiday Commercials that remain vivid in our minds, we have filtered out the top 10. Whether they are heartfelt commercials, asthetically pleasing, or extremely funny commercials, this list is full of memorable Holiday cheer that may even raise a spark in your memory of the Holiday season.
10. Hersheys Kisses - Christmas Jingle Commercial
This simple and classic commercial adds delight to the holiday season with the jingle played by the hersheys kisses. I always had glass bowls filled of those Holiday wrapped kissed during the season and it brings me right back to all of the joyous festivities that come this time of year.
9. Folgers - Home For the Holidays Commercial
Ok this may be the sap in me, but I love this Holiday commercial. The best part of the Holiday season is being able to see friends and family that you havn't seen in awhile. It is a time to reunite with loved ones and spend quality time with one another. This commercial resinates with any reunited family during the holidays and brings out the true meaning of Christmas.
8. Puffs Plus Tissues - Holiday Ice Skating Commercial
I remember when Puffs first came out with these Clay-mation, "Nose in Need" commercials for the Holiday season and I immediatly loved them because they reminded me of the old clay-mation holiday films that play every year. The narrative voice in these commercials also related to a Dr. Seus-type work as seen in How the Grinch Stole Christmas. The puffs nose in need clay-mations continue to play with different seasonal scenarios, but the first Ice-skating commercial made will always be the most memorable for the Holidays.
7. Target - Crazy Lady 2-Day Sale
I just love these target commercials with the crazy shopper lady who warms up for every 2-day sale in her full out red jumpsuit. This line of humourous commercials poke fun at the chaos of the season and this woman hits the nail on the head. Since 2010, this crazy target lady has been featured in Holiday Target commercials and I hope she continues to carry the torch for Holiday Seasons to come!
6. Direct TV - Christmas Villians Commercial
This is a hilarous scenario in which all TV and movie villians are seen doing good deeds for the Holiday season as a family brings Direct TV into their home. You can see Freddy Kruger cutting flowers for the home and Dracula joinging the party as a way to show everyone putting aside their differences and enjoying the Holidays together. Pretty Clever Direct TV!
5. Virgin Mobile - Chrismahanukwanzakah
One word: HYSTERICAL. I LOVE LOVE LOVE this ad from Virgin mobile, highlighting mobile data plans for all Holiday Celebrations in an extremely funny and catchy jingle. I havn't seen this commercial on for about 7 years now, but I do wish they bring it back. Happy Chrismahanukwanzakah everybody!
4. Holiday M&Ms -Christmas with Santa Commercial
M&M has done a great job in maintaining these two M&M characters for a long and successful campaign, but this holiday commercial is one that I will never forget. When the two M&M's realize that Santa Exists, and in return, Santa realizes that the M&M's also do exist, it makes for a really funny commercial. M&Ms, being candy, did a great job playing on the belief of Santa Clause for young kids during Christmas.
3. Campbells Soup - Snowman Commercial
Talk about Nostaligia! This Ad has been playing every Holiday season since 1995. I remember it vividly from my childhood and how I loved that the Snowman melted back into a boy when he ate his Campbells chicken noodle soup. Not only is the soup itself a reminder of being a child and bing served warm chicken noodle soup during the cold weather months, but this Campbells commercial has established itself throughout the years as an iconic staple in the holiday Season. Mmmm Mmmm Good.
2. Coca Cola - Holiday Truck Commercial
There is no christmas without the Coca Cola Truck to light up the streets on this Holiday Commercial. Very much like the classic Brand of Coca Cola, this commercial is filled with nostalgic memories growing up as a kid and spending christmas with family and friends - and of course decorating with lots of christmas lights!
1. All State Car Insurance - 12 Days of Mayhem Commercial
This commercial is awesome, not just because it is hilarious to see a personified form of "Mayhem," but it is spot on in capturing the mayhem that often times comes with the chaos of the Holiday season. I like how this commercial makes light of all the little things that go wrong when your stressed during the holiday season, reminds me of a Griswalds Christmas!
