It's that time of year where the weather is warm, the energy is high, and the festivities begin. By festivities, of course, I mean music festival mania! This involves 2-3 day events in specific music hall locations with a line-up of artists pertaining to the genre and or genre(s) associated with that specific festival. These events acquire a large cult following of youth and older generations as well who come from all over to pay tribute to their favorite artists and bands. Because these crazy festivals last all day long and for multiple days, there is often camping involved set up in a tailgating type manner in which groups of fans set up, camp out, and live and breathe the music.
-Of course, some people come prepared more than others - and if you don't go through the list of necessities before entering the music festival culture, you could find yourself out of water by the first day - and god forbid- out of beer! Always make sure you have enough supplies to live off of based on the size of your group and the number of days you are staying. You will be out in the sun alll day so shade and lots of water should be first on your list!
Also, if your thinking of wearing the cutest outfits for music festivals, know that they will get dirty and they may get ruined. The music festival culture isn't about wearing top designer brands and looking like you just stepped of the red carpet. Music Festival fashion has evolved to mimic the culture itself; boho grunge, punk, minimalists, with the acceptance that this isnt a beauty contest; it's a lifestyle.
Just because you will have minimal access to showers, be living in a tent for a few days, and will probably smell like the alleyway behind an ethically questionable restaurant, DOESN'T mean you can't rock a good look. In fact, the bigger the music festival culture has gotten, the more I have noticed that the grunge-style within the camp culture has surfaced more prominently into the fashion world. But let's just jump to the music festivals of 2013 and the trends that you can expect, and the ones you should reject.

Comfort trumps style in the heat, but a flowy sundress and perhaps a flower or two in your hair will do...accessorize with colorful bracelets and anklets long pendant necklaces and feather earrings. Just add your own twists of color and style with accessories and look boho chic.

Maybe it's the electronic vibes of Movement or the people that it attracts, but as far as fashion is concerned, movement is the most vivacious yet. If Music festivals were holidays, Movement would most definitely be Halloween. Originally called the Detroit Electronic Music Festival or DEMF, fans come adorned in pleather, plaid, neon, and chains. From head to toe, their bodies are bejewled in steam-punk accessories, straps, and frills as if Jersey Shore meets The Mad Hatter. If you go to movement wearing anything less than costume decor, you will find yourself a bit under dressed. So go crazy with your style and let loose! Movement is most definitely a festival that truly allows you to embellesh your look to the max.

With 700 Acres filled with up to 80,000 fans/campers, Bonnaroo is a festival that has quite the hype. Over 150 performances and 10+ stages, is what makes Bonnaroo one of the biggest festivals of the summer. For 4 days, fan camp, eat and sleep on the grounds and packing all the necessities to last your group during these days is a task in itself. The sixties were all about breaking the mold. Whether in society or in the world of pop-culture, the 1960's became a time of Anti-conformity, Rock & Roll, Peace, Love, and Pushing Limits. Out of the 60's came a wave of Fashion evolution, taking the hour glass curvature and mid-calf lenth dresses of the 1950's, and molding a completely opposite trend consisting of shapeless, ambiguous, and very short "mini" dresses. This style, which started by a new generation of young Modernists in Britain, became the staple of 1960's fashion - better known as "Mod." The "mini" dress, since it'sdebut in 1960, has never left the Fashion Industry, presenting itself in many colors, fabrics, and adornments, but yet it's mid-thigh length remains the same. Where Brit Mod took on brightly colored, quadrilateral patterns, America took on the mod A-line mini dress a bit differed using flashy gold and silver embellishments or simply solid colors such as black or white. Often times, the mini-dress was worn with platform boots that came up over the knee, or simple ballet flats. When I think of this look, I think of Twiggy - or Andy Warhol, Edie Sedgewick, and the Silver Factory - an age of expression and youth in revolt. Today, I have seen the mod culture inspire many new trends. For instance, I went shopping for a dress for New Years Eve and everywhere I went had at least one mini dress with long sleeves and a high neckline. The modern twist of this look keeps the flashy embellishments used in the past, but pulls away from the A-line shape and heavy material, giving it a more flexible and fitted look. The other side of fashion in the later 1960's was the high-waisted, wide leg bell bottoms, the light, chiffon, flutter blouses, turtlenecks and, of course, the fur vests which lead towards the fashion of the 70's.

The early 1970's continued with the peasant tops, bell-bottom, hippie look of the late 60's, but as the decade moved forward, loose fitting attire became a bit more scarce - to say the least. The 70's took the lenth of a shirt from below the waist to above the belly buttom, hence the term: "belly shirt." The 70's also took the length of shorts from mid-thigh to, well, real high - hence the term: "booty shorts." The 70's was a decade of freedom and openness, which can also be attributed to the lack of coverage provided in 70's fashion trends (my observation - not a fact). As the decade moved forward, and the music changed from anti-war, Rock & Roll beats of the 60's to the post-war upbeat and carefree celebritory music. With the post-war culture change, came a sociatal "dance, dance, revolution." This new social lightness, changed the fashion industry greatly, turning away from the nuetral, grunge, hippie look of the anti-war movement and creating pieces based around this new social epidemic called "Disco Fever." The Disco days were flashy, tight fit attire, big hair, big shoes, and big dance moves. Today, the early 70's style is more relevant in the fashion world, mimicked with bell bottoms, but tighter fit with smaller flare. We also see a new rendition of the "belly shirt" in crop tops which I saw reappear all last summer. We dont often see the Disco style being revived (which is probably good), but subtly it appears in modern day fashion trends with brightly colored leggings and "funky" platform shoes - got to love those platform shoes!

Ahh the 80's...the decade of brit pop, madonna, and material girls all over the world. I love the bright colors and crazy attire of the 80's. Those multi-colored jumpsuits, leg warmers, cindy lauper hig hairstyles, and the scrunchy. When I think of the 80's in a nutshell, these come to mind: pez, trolls, Jane Fonda, and one of my favorite bands Pulp (check em out). Either way, we can all agree that the 80's we funny, bubbly, care-free, and yes, very materialistic. The 80's were a time where there wasn't much worry, the country was at an economic high, we did not fear war, and a new generation of happy- go-luckys were born. These factors all together provided a great environment for the entertainment industry to surge. With the rise of MTV Madonna's hit song "Like a Virgin," society began to look at their favorite stars a role models in life, love, and most importantly, fashion. Brand names became increasingly important in the 80's because everyone needed to mimick their favorite celebritys and wear only the most popular trends of the day. Another trend moving forward was the Women of the Workplace attire, evolving from the idea that women in an office was no longer unusual and women were now establishing their own "power" in the working world. The style for women workers often consisted of women's suits, shoulder pads, pointed toes, and spike heels. The ideology of this style was the idea of masculating a women to make her equally as powerful as men in the workplace. Of course the more outrageous couture of the time stemmed from the pop Cindy Laupers, Madonna's, and Pat Benetars of the time with the big hair, red lipstick, and layered jewelry. We often see this "pop star" look today through lace tights, tutu dresses and Peplum shirts and dresses. Leggings have also resurfaced in current years only in the form of solid black or "jeggings." Leg warmers have also re-joined the fashion world but are often worn with tall boots and skinny jeans. However the 80's "Jane Fonda" has still yet to surface and (I pray) it doesnt anytime soon...:-O
Lately I have been noticing a lot of old trends coming back into style; plaid, blazers, 80's style frock-tops, ect. It made me wonder how modern day fashion is able to transform the styles set by past decades into something of it's own. In my search, I came across articles posted by Tuft University called: Fashion Trends Through the Decades, which provides detailed descriptions of each decade of fashion beginning with the roaring 20s. It was interesting to see the styles of the past, repeat themselves in the modern day fashion world. Using this reference, I have been able to scope out some modern day pieces that revive the looks of the past decades to show that it is possible to delve into the fashion of the past while keeping up with current trends!

From fringed frocks to oversized coats, the roaring 20's is a style that will always re-appear in the fashion world. Although when one thinks of the 1920's fashion, bold and daring pieces come to mind: The black fringed flapper dress, feather boa's, bob haircuts, long silk gloves and nilon tights. In the modern world, this cliche 1920's look is often thought of as burlesue-like or used as halloween costumes. However, there are certain pieces of 1920's fashion that are have been revived into modern fashion, being presented on the runway in a more subtle, romanticized way. Instead of the typical flapper dress, we may see the use of fringe in crop tops or short skirts. Fringe is now usually added to more fitted pieces as opposed to the frock style dresses of the 1920's. Frock dresses have been revived in modern fashion as well, however, today's frock dress is presented without overstated embellishmenst such as fringe, sequins, or feathers. Instead these modern-day frocks are simple, light, and plain, only representing the roaring 20's look in size and shape. The 1920's outerwear has also made a revival in modern day. Oversized peacoats and pillbox hats are a common 20's style feature seen on the runway. However, where the 20's style outerwhere was fitted and with many buttons, the modern take on this vintage look created by keeping the peacoat less fitted and giving it a shawl-like visage. Another modern take on the peacoat would be to add fur lining, a long slit on the bottom, and/or adding a hood. These changes keep the 1920's style subtly alive, while creating a new refreshing and modernized look.

The 1930's - 40's was a big change from the fun, charasmatic attire of the 1920's, it was more conservative and proper with below the knee length dresses and emphasis on the empire waist-line. Heavier clothing such as long, pleated skirts and wool dresses were also a large aspect of fashion. During the WWII, fabric and other resources were preserved for military reasons and the price of fabric went up dramatically. For most middle class women who did not have the money to buy a new dress or skirt, took to wearing trousers. After the war, style glammed up much more with V-necklines and ankle-strap heels. Dresses were hourglass shaped and as the 1940's moved forward to the 50s dresses became tighter fit. In modern times, this 1930's - 1940's look often times is seen in pin-up girls headbands and gaucho trouser pants.

The 1950's is all about hour glass shaped dresses, high waistlines, and crazy patterns, bringing a whole new genre of fashion to life. When I think of the 1950's I picture the all-american housewife in the suburbs with the apron in the kitchen, or malt milkshakes, suburban conformity, and mass production. The 1950's style is oftentimes referred to as retro. It was edgier, more colorful, and boldly stated with dramatic angles and exaggerated waistlines. The common fabric was tweed and other synthetic fabrics because they were easier to maintain. The modern twist to this familiar 1950's retro style is to continue with the all so famous hourglass dress, but adding more modern fabric, such as lace, cotton, or velvet with deeper, more dramatic tones. Instead of the retro bright reds, polka-dots, and 50's style prints, you will find the modern retro to be more subtle, delicate, and richer in color. The modern retro dress is also much shorter, going from the 1950's mid-calf length dress to Now, mid-thigh. 50's bright colors and unique patterns are also seen in modern-day fashion, but are used moreso as accent pieces or in separates rather than in the dress pattern itself.

It's pretty safe to say winter is here at last - brrr! These below zero temperatures and cold winds are making it extremely hard to be outdoors. Not to mention the snow and Ice making it a lot harder to get from A to B. I do however, enjoy winter. Its beautiful, calm, and fun for skiing, snowboarding and hot cocoa. However, after the Holiday season is over and I'm back to the old grind, I slowly begin to get bitter towards the cold. This feeling usually hits me around the first week of February and I begin to feel like it has been cold forever and only getting colder. This is when I begin plotting a permanent move to somewhere warmer - anywhere warmer! It's not just the cold weather that I begin to despise, its the change in my lifestyle brought on by the cold weather. The cold makes it harder to get out of bed in the morning and it makes it even worse to get out of a hot shower, which then makes it harder to get to work on time, let alone getting to work and looking some-what presentable. Ultimately, the cold has directly effected my everyday life! Due to my morning routine being thrown out the window, I am now rushing to be on time, freezing, and uncomfortable, which means I usually just settle with an outfit consisting of the most work-friendly, comfortable and warm clothes I have - which means I look like I robbed the clothes off an old persons back or am trying out for a role in The Hobbit. Call it dramatic, but as someone who loves fashion and keeping up with the most recent trends, my style takes a big hit in the Winter!
